As we know that Sikh’s believes in giving and receiving love to create a prosperous & peaceful life and Sikh functions are also famous because they celebrate their functions with the fullness of joy and happiness. Despite of the growing modern culture of Punjabi Matrimony sites, but Punjabi still follow their old matrimonial system.  Today we discuss all Punjabi Wedding rituals, Customs and traditions of Punjabi Marriage. Let’s have a look.  

Engagement Ceremony/Kurmai

The wedding is generally started from the engagement ceremony which is generally performed a week ago before marriage.

Akhand Paath

Akhand Paath means a readers reads the Holy Book ”Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji” before marriage. This is done for praying the God to do all the function in a good way.

Shagan

This function is performed generally before a marriage day in front of Shri Guru Granth Sahib when readers complete the Akhand Paath, then bride’s family members offer some precious gifts to groom called Shagan. This Shagan is included Gold accessories for the groom, Dry fruits, a few amounts of money and etc.

Chunni Chadana

Before a day, a groom’s relatives female visit bride’s house bringing some gifts such as brides outfit, make up kit, Jewelry and with the Chunni called Phulkari. A groom mother and family cover the bride’s head with Phulkari. This shows that a groom’s family accepts the brides as a family member.

Maiya

It is a cleansing ceremony and made from the turmeric paste. This ceremony is performed on both families.

Milni

This is a small welcome, when groom, their family, friends and relative called Bharat reached at the bride’s house.

Anand Karaj

Anand Karaj literally means ‘Blissful Union’. The ceremony takes place at the Gurudwara prayer hall during the daytime or during afternoons. The couple then takes four pheras around the Guru Granth Sahib. The groom leads the pheras and bride follows them to complete Anand Karaj Ritual.

Vidaai

After completing the all ceremony of wedding and having a lunch; a most emotional moment is come called vidaai. This is a time when a bride goodbye their family and take a new step with the soul mate in a new life. A bride throws back a handful of puffed rice over her head, making the wishes of prosperity and well-being for her parents and home. We can also say that this is the binding of the all the all moments.

Pag Phere

Next day of wedding, bride and groom visit bride’s home for first time as a couple. Here bride’s family offers gifts an blessing to a newly married couple.
